Peter Gee Biography

Peter Gee, a British-born artist, developer, and influential figure in the pop art movement of the 1960s, led a life marked by creativity, innovation, and a profound impact on the art world. Born on July 23, 1932, in Leicestershire, England, Gee's passion for art was evident from his childhood, where he showed an early interest in drawing. This passion would guide him through a vibrant and diverse career, spanning several decades and continents. Gee's journey into the professional world of art began at the age of 18 when he joined the British army and worked as a graphic designer. This experience not only honed his skills but also exposed him to a broader spectrum of artistic expressions and techniques. By the end of the 1950s, Gee had already made a name for himself, exhibiting his work at the Denise Rene Gallery in Paris and the Axiom Gallery in London. These early exhibitions laid the groundwork for what would become a prolific career in art. In 1962, Gee moved to the United States, a decision that marked the beginning of a significant phase in his career. Settling in New York City, he quickly became an active and successful participant in the pop art movement, a cultural phenomenon that sought to challenge traditional notions of art by incorporating elements of popular and commercial culture. Throughout the 1960s, Gee's work gained considerable recognition, and he exhibited alongside other prominent artists such as Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. His contributions to the "Word and Image" show in 1968 at the Museum of Modern Art, where he showcased his unique approach to pop art, further solidified his status as a key figure in the movement. Gee's artistic endeavors were not limited to pop art. He was deeply interested in color theory, a fascination that influenced much of his work. Until the 1980s, silkscreen printing was his preferred medium for exploring color combinations, using basic shapes like bulls-eye targets and simplified daisies in various arrangements. His work during this period was characterized by vibrant colors and bold patterns, often printed on unique materials such as silver mylar and metallic gold paper. Later in life, Gee transitioned to painting with oils and making giclée prints, continuing his exploration of color through these different mediums. Beyond his contributions to the art world, Gee was also involved in the development and renovation of historic and unusual buildings in Soho and Tribeca, including the Puck Building. His work in this area demonstrated his versatility and creativity, extending his artistic vision beyond the canvas to the spaces in which people live and work. Gee's personal life was as rich and varied as his professional one. He was married to Olga Opsahl Gee, with whom he had two children, Odin and Harry. Odin Gee later managed his father's estate, ensuring that his legacy would continue to be celebrated and appreciated. Gee's work has been collected by prestigious institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and Kyoto, The Smithsonian and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others. Peter Gee passed away on December 1, 2005, at the age of 73, after being incorrectly diagnosed with walking pneumonia and ultimately succumbing to lymphoma. Despite his passing, Gee's influence on the art world remains indelible. His innovative approach to pop art, his exploration of color theory, and his contributions to the development of New York City's architectural landscape have left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire artists and art enthusiasts alike.
